force boost: fairytales are just lies that don't hurt.

The librarians had told them fairytales. They read to the dozen tired and cranky children about monsters vanishing in clouds of smoke, or curses that broke in a shower of sparks.

Instead, Flavio watches his best friend’s flesh rend itself apart. No, not like that at all. It was much worse.

Fafnir’s flesh didn’t burn, but it did broil with fire and magic. His skull cracked, in the brief flickers Flavio could see when Fafnir was consumed by transforming flames, to allow horns to form.

A part of Flavio wanted to think that Fafnir’s eyes were the same even when the iris and sclera were alien and different. He really did. But that wasn’t the truth when the person you love is forcibly remolded through raw power, for a fight neither he or Arianna asked for. And that stung.

Eventually, Flavio stops hesitating. He reaches out and takes Fafnir’s clawed hand. The power in Fafnir burns hot and bright and then it’s over like a falling star, but Fafnir’s body still has to deal with the consequences. He may say it’s fine, that it doesn’t hurt. But Flavio watches Fafnir’s flesh go from a hardened carapace back to his own (flushed, shakey, and ill) flesh and blood. He watches blood try to replace fire, and his skull refits itself. Flavio tries not to think about where the horns go.

One day Flavio takes the chance to run his fingers through Fafnir's hair, and on another Fafnir kisses Flavio mid change while those cold hard roots climb up his throat in its mockery of armor.

Flavio kisses Fafnir back anyway. Maybe someday that curse will break, and that power nestled in Fafnir’s chest will gently fade, or turn into butterflies and fly away, or something. It was always worth a shot.

baitdrop: in his defense, linebeck feels he's already fought his lifetime required amount of sea monsters.

"I don't have any use for stowaways, Linebeck. Are you going to fight or not?”

Fight that thing? Look, kid-”

Captain.”

“-sure, yeah, as I was saying-”

“Cut the line,” Tetra turned to leave with a dismissive gesture. “This is a waste of time.”

Linebeck provided a frantic, “Wait, wait wait!” while Link watched Gonzo slice through the rope holding him up. An indignant and undignified scream, followed by a splash. Link allowed a moment, and then hopped up from his perch to grab an empty barrel.

He could at least give Linebeck a better chance at swimming back to shore.
